چکیده

The production of organic matter and calcium carbonate by a dense population of the brittle star Acrocnida brachiata (Echinodermata) was calculated using demographic structure, population density, and relations between the size (disk diameter) and the ash-free dry weight (AFDW) or the calcimass. During a 2-year survey in the Bay of Seine (Eastern English Channel, France), organic production varied from 29 to 50 gAFDW m year and CaCO3 production from 69 to 104 gCaCO3 m −2 year. Respiration was estimated between 1.7 and 2.0 molCO2 m −2 year. Using the molar ratio (=) of CO2 released: CaCO3 precipitated, this biogenic precipitation of calcium carbonate would result in an additional release between 0.5 and 0.7 molCO2 m −2 year that represented 23% and 26% of total CO2 fluxes (sum of calcification and respiration). The results of the present study suggest that calcification in temperate shallow environments should be considered as a significant source of CO2 to seawater and thus a potential source of CO2 to the atmosphere, emphasizing the important role of the biomineralization (estimated here) and dissolution (endoskeletons of dead individuals) in the carbon budget of temperate coastal ecosystems.

The Anti-Proliferative and Anti-Angiogenic Effect of the Methanol Extract from Brittle Star

Background: Anti-angiogenic therapy is a crucial step in cancer treatment. The discovery of new anti-angiogenic compounds from marine organisms has become an attractive concept in anti-cancer therapy. Because little data correlated to the pro- and anti-angiogenic efficacies of Ophiuroidea, which include brittle star, the current study was designed to explore the anti-angiogenic potential of bri...

Anti-cancer effects of the methanolic extract of Persian Gulf brittle star

Nowadays natural compounds are increasingly used in various fields since they cause fewer adverse side effects than their chemical counterparts. In addition, preparation and production of natural compounds are comparatively simple. The present study aimed to evaluate the anti-cancer effects of brittle star methanol extract on MCF-7 cells. Anti-cancer effects of brittle star methanol extract wer...

Evaluation of the inhibitory synergic effects of the Persian Gulf brittle star extract and taxol on ovarian cancer A2780cp

Paclitaxel is a current standard chemotherapeutic drug for ovarian cancer with several side effects. Recurrences of drug resistant clones have been considered the serious problem in the failure of chemotherapy. Medicinal marine natural products have been intensively proposed as diverse chemotherapeutic agents. Therefore there is an affinity to find efficient modality to overwhelm ovarian cancer...

Net uptake of atmospheric CO2 by coastal submerged aquatic vegetation

'Blue Carbon', which is carbon captured by marine living organisms, has recently been highlighted as a new option for climate change mitigation initiatives. In particular, coastal ecosystems have been recognized as significant carbon stocks because of their high burial rates and long-term sequestration of carbon. However, the direct contribution of Blue Carbon to the uptake of atmospheric CO2 t...
